Professional Practice

What is a Medical Herbalist?

As a medical herbalist and a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, I am trained in conventional medical sciences alongside the therapeutic use of medicinal plants. This includes education in clinical assessment, examination, and diagnosis, combined with a thorough understanding of herbal treatment and prescribing.

Medical herbalists typically undertake extensive degree-level training and complete over 500 hours of supervised clinical practice. This provides a comprehensive grounding in human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology, in addition to in-depth knowledge of medicinal plants and their safe and effective use.

Herbal prescriptions may include a range of preparations such as teas, where active constituents are extracted in hot water; tinctures, in which constituents are extracted using alcohol; and capsules, containing dried herbal material that is digested in the gut. Different herbs can be combined within a prescription to create an individualised treatment plan, and multiple preparation methods may be used together to achieve broader therapeutic support.

Where appropriate, medical herbalists are happy to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, including doctors, to ensure safe, integrated, and well-coordinated care. As with all healthcare practitioners, patient confidentiality is treated with the utmost importance.

The Consultation

During a consultation, we take the time to explore your health in detail. This includes discussing your medical history, family history, lifestyle, specific symptoms, and overall wellbeing, and may involve a clinical examination if necessary. This comprehensive assessment allows us to create an individualised treatment plan tailored to your needs, taking a holistic approach to support your body’s natural healing processes.

Herbal treatments may include teas, tinctures, capsules, or creams, alongside dietary and lifestyle recommendations designed to promote overall wellness and balance.

A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled 2–4 weeks later to review your progress, make any necessary adjustments, and provide additional herbal prescriptions if needed.

Consultations are typically held in person to allow for clinical examination, although virtual appointments may be possible in certain cases.
